Jim Richings’career, which began with City firm Slaughter & May, spans more than 30 years. He established his own freelance practice more than 20 years ago. Jim is a highly experienced Costs Advocate and Draftsman dealing with all aspects of catastrophic injury, intellectual property and commercial litigation.

Isobel Simpson Fidelma Padfield Carole Maskell

Isobel has 15 years experience and is the senior member of the Leigh based team. Isobel works closely with Jim Richings and has established a reputation for her skilful drafting of the most complex Bills of Costs. She enjoys en excellent track record and the recovery of 90% plus of the Bills.  Isobel is a determined and powerful negotiator.

Fidelma Padfield is a double science graduate who began her costs drafting career in the clinical negligence and catastrophic injury fields.Over the last five years Fidelma has broadened her experience to include personal injury, insurance and property litigation.

Carole has headed the family department for the past 14 years. She has extensive experience in dealing with every aspect of family and matrimonial proceedings. Carole has dealt with many high profile matters involving multi parte matters involving generic, general management and individual claims for costs.

David Broadbent Clive Davies Christine Richings

David Broadbent who heads our recently opened Northern Office in Warrington has over fifteen years experience in drafting, negotiating and advocacy. David’s specialist area is personal injury work including high value catastrophic injuries, clinical negligence and industrial disease cases in addition to general litigation, matrimonial matters and building disputes. Previously he has worked both freelance and latterly in house, as costs manager for two leading north-west firms.

Clive is a graduate of the University of London who commenced his legal career at Lawrence Messer and Co. and now has over 25 years experience dealing with costs. During his time at Freshfields and Holman & Fenwick’s and Co. Clive specialised in commercial, shipping and high profile litigation. Clive is an experienced negotiator and attends assessment hearings.

Christine is our Continuing Education Co-ordinator and heads our non-contentious costs department. On graduating from Lancaster University in 1979 (B.Ed Hons) and after a successful teaching career as head of mathematics she opted for a career change into the law and ultimately found a niche within legal costs.

Sarah Wingrove Helen Crouch Sarah Burrell

Sarah Wingrove has worked for 15 years as a Costs Advocate and Draftsman. Sarah has held in house positions at both Russell Jones and Walker and Davies Arnold Cooper, whilst assisting Jim Richings. She is experienced in dealing with all aspects of personal injury, medical negligence, commercial litigation and shipping.

Helen began her secretarial career in London working for a Stockbroker.  She has been Jim Richings' personal assistant for 10 years and her efficiency in dealing with matters is second to none.

Sarah is the Accounts Manager at Richings and has worked for the Company since 1992.  She is based at our Leigh on Sea / Administration office and deals with all matters relating to accounts.

Carol Carey Carol Lambert  

Carole Carey worked as a secretary in London for 20 years.  She then joined Richings in 1995 as secretary to Carole Maskell and Isobel Simpson.  She works closely with Carole and Isobel to ensure the smooth and efficient running of their matters. She is a very competent and experienced member of the team.

After commencing her legal career over 20 years ago at leading Cambridge solicitors, Hewitsons, Carol moved on to the prestigious London firm of Mishcon de Reya.  After a brief career break, Carol retrained as a Costs Draftsman and has found her earlier experiences, particularly in family and care proceedings, invaluable in understanding all aspects of matrimonial costing.

The firm has a broad client base. The City office deals mainly with insurance based litigation, construction and libel. Richings has dealt successfully with many high profile cases ranging from the Lloyd's Names litigation to acting for the former Tory Cabinet Minister, Jonathan Aitken and the former Prime Minister, John Major. 


The Essex, Kent and Sussex offices deal with many aspects of Civil Litigation, including personal injury, clinical negligence and in dealing with the Assessment of Costs in respect of public funded matters. There is a separate department for Matrimonial work headed by Carole Maskell. In total we have 14 Draftsmen with support assistance to deal with Assessment requirements.
